How does the Light Adjustable Lens work? 

Most cataract lenses are one-size-fits-all once they're inside the eye. Surgeons use math and measurements before the procedure to guess which lens power you need. But because every eye heals differently, that guess isn't always perfect. That can lead to a "refractive surprise," where you still need glasses for distance or reading even after surgery.

The Light Adjustable Lens is made of a special material that reacts to ultraviolet (UV) light. After your eye heals from the initial surgery, you come into our office for a series of quick, painless light treatments. 

We use a specialized device to project a precise beam of light onto the lens, changing its shape and power. That allows us to fine-tune your prescription in real time.

Why is LAL more accurate than traditional lenses?

The biggest advantage of LAL is its precision. Because we adjust the lens based on how your eye sees after it’s healed, the results are far superior to traditional methods. You don't have to hope the math was right; we make sure it's right.

The numbers back this up. In one study, 94% of patients who received the LAL achieved 20/20 distance vision or better without glasses. In comparison, standard lenses only help about 36% of patients reach that same level of clarity.  

What should you expect during the process?

Choosing the LAL means you're an active partner in your vision care. After we implant the lens, you need to wear special UV-protective glasses during all waking hours for about 3-5 weeks. That protects the lens from the sun and indoor lights while it's still in the adjustable phase. 

During this time, you visit our team for 2-4 light treatments. Each session only takes a few minutes. Tell us how you're seeing at home, at work, and while driving. We adjust the lens based on your feedback until you're thrilled with the results. 

Once we hit the target, a final lock-in treatment makes the prescription permanent.
